FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, May 24, 2018

[Olmsted County, Minnesota]  Kevin Torgerson announced today he will seek a second term as Olmsted County Sheriff.  A 2018 campaign kickoff will take place on June 6th from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm at Whistle Binkies North, Rochester.  Everyone is encouraged to attend!

“Nearly four years ago the citizens of Olmsted County affirmed the importance of continuous service, community, and vision in the delivery of public safety services,” said Torgerson.  “We’ve worked hard to partner with the community and various organizations to advance trust, improve transparency, and establish the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office as a regional leader.”  Among many accomplishments, Torgerson is very proud of the work of all of the Sheriff’s Office including:

  • Increasing public safety information sharing and connections through social media
  • Enhancing community engagement and awareness by participation in Trends Events, Coffee with a Deputy, National Night Out, and many others
  • Renewing fiscal responsibility by operating under budget each year
  • Implementing body cameras on the street and in the detention center
  • Supporting drug court and the need for mental health services in the community
  • Partnering with Latino Community Conversations to build knowledge and trust
  • Continuing to promote public safety though efforts like DWI and drug enforcement

For the next four years, if reelected, Torgerson’s priorities include: (1) supporting the completion of a public safety training center as well as continuing crisis intervention and de-escalation training; (2) working with justice partners to establish a risk-based pre-trial release program; (3) building connections with community and government partners to better respond to mental health concerns; and, (4) curbing drug use and addiction with enforcement, awareness, and education.

Torgerson first announced his candidacy for Olmsted County Sheriff in December 2013.  He was overwhelmingly elected in November 2014, taking office on January 6, 2015.  He sought the Office of Sheriff with a commitment to cultivate community and regional partnerships, improve technology, collaborate with the community, exercise fiscal responsibility, and promote staff development.  As the Sheriff of Olmsted County, Torgerson leads 177 employees and volunteers, oversees an annual budget of nearly $30 million, and serves a diverse population of over 150,000 people.

Prior to being elected, Torgerson continuously served with the Sheriff’s Office for more than 27 years, holding a number of leadership positions in the Sheriff’s Office, including Captain and Director of Emergency Management.  This year marked his 32nd year of service to Olmsted County.  Torgerson already filed for office on the first day of filing, May 22, 2018.
